Magnetic Separation:Ilmenite and magnetite are minerals with natural magnetic power, and can be separated from non-magnetic particles using strong magnets. The process includes high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS), high intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) and low intensity magnetic separator (LIMS). The HGMS performs a batch process while the HIMS performs a continuous process. These two processes are typically used for paramagnetic particles while the LIMS are used for ferromagnetic particles. The main considerations that need to be taken into account while processing an ore is the size distribution, the presence of tramp metal and the liberation of the particles being separated.
The process is performed by moving particles in a magnetic field. The force experienced in the magnetic field is given by the equation f=m/k.H.dh/dx, where k-magnetic susceptibility, H-magnetic field strength, and dh/dx being the magnetic field gradient. The equation explains that the separation can be driven in two ways, either through the gradient or the strength of a magnetic field. The different driving forces are used in the different concentrators, these can be either with or without water. Like the spirals, washwater aids in the separation of the particles while increasing the entrainment of the gangue in the concentrate.(Magnetic Separation)
